D158: Intermediate Scenic Design
Course Objective: Continuing students interested in scenic design will build upon their foundational knowledge and skills acquired in the introductory course. Students will create advanced visual designs through the use of Photoshop and SketchUp. This course will dive deeper into realizing design in a pre-production setting. The goal is for students to further develop their visual concepts that align with the analysis of the text, to familiarize themselves with programs such as Photoshop that will help create textures for their scenic design, and to take lines from a script that will, through the process, develop into a fully conceptualized design.
Self-Portrait using Photoshop
Using the Photoshop program, explore the different tools to make a portrait that represents you as a person. The objective of the assignment was to get students familiar with the Photoshop program.
My Self-Portrait journey began by adding items or themes that I enjoy in my pastime such as collecting vinyl records, listening to music, and spending time connecting to my cultural roots. Once my visuals were on a blank canvas, I began to use the free transform tool to morph these images into a feminine side profile with detailing in her hair, face, and neck. The Self-Portrait is a metaphorical and physical representation of the person I know myself to be.
Concrete Chamber
Using SketchUp, create 3D concrete chambers and create textures for the chambers in Photoshop. Draft concrete chamber on Vectorworks program. Create a 3D model of the concrete chamber using the textures made in Photoshop and measurements provided by the drafts made in Vectorworks. The goal is to develop students’ ability to design from one program to another swiftly without a problem and to use programs such as Photoshop to further develop design concepts that could potentially be a part of the 3D model process.
