Drama 280B: Realizing Scenic Design
Course Objective: 10-week graduate-level course in which students will focus on furthering their skills using programs such as SketchUp and Photoshop. Modernity within technology allows students to experiment during the conceptualization of a design. Students will create a design inspired by 2001: A Space Odyssey using SketchUp and its developing tools such as Diffusion. The core object of this course will be for students to make a professional-level model using technology such as 3D scanning, 3D printing, and laser cutting while also being encouraged to use traditional model-making methods.
SketchUp Program - Diffusion Tool
Embracing modernity means stepping out of one’s comfort zone. Students will build a 3D model of a room on the SketchUp program and use the Diffusion tool as a method of research while curating a design concept. They will enter a prompt and the Diffusion tool will give several options of the rendered room according to the text entered.Rustic Waiting Room
Rustic, Warm Space
Futuristic, Cold Space
2001: A Space Odyssey Interactive Experience
Students will build an exhibition or structure inspired by Stanley Kubrick’s 2001: A Space Odyssey on the steps of the Guggenheim Museum on the SketchUp program. The objective is to present 8 or more Diffusion images to illustrate one’s visual concept.
Gathering Ideas . . .
Rough Draft Sketches and ideas written down while watching the film. I allowed myself to visualize the production design of the whole walk-through experience, down to the music playing and the props for the audience to interact with. My goal was to affect the audience’s five senses while walking through the exhibition.
Final Product
Fade by Tanya Saracho 3D Model
Moving forward with my design concept for Fade by Tanya Saracho, I created a 3D model using traditional model-making methods while also incorporating modern technology such as 3D printing and laser cutting. My initial idea included projections on the walls, so I used a mini projector to project my building textures and the character’s inner monologues.
